Counterbalance is a series of artworks exploring intimacy, innocence and power exchange in the form of touch. Concept and materials mirror one other. Metal is incised with harsh black lines and inked, then pressed into soft, colorful, luminous planes of paint.
Touch activates powerful emotional states: vulnerability, adrenaline, heat, curiosity, control, desire, revulsion, pleasure, struggle, love. The states of being associated with it are nearly always significantly larger and more complex than the act itself.
Printmaking is also an expression of tactility. An artistic endeavor on the press is shaped by the pressure, attentiveness and state of mind of the artist, but it is also largely influenced by mysterious forces of chemistry, alchemy and spirit that effect both art and intimacy.
